Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Huntsville AL
1101 AM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025
...New NEAR TERM, SHORT TERM, CLIMATE...
.NEAR TERM...
(Rest of Today and Tonight)
Issued at 1101 AM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025
Showers and storms have had an early start to the area this
morning under the influence of southeastern flow, already dumping
1-2" of rainfall in portions of northeastern Alabama (specifically
Jackson and Madison counties). Through the rest of the day, these
areas will be our highest concern for flash flooding potential.
However, flash flooding will be a threat throughout all of
northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee. PWATs are in the
2-2.25" range, which is near or above the 90th percentile of
sounding climatology per BMX. Additionally, low and mid level
moisture within model soundings is above 75% RH. The Weather
Prediction Center has outlooked most of our area in a Slight risk
(level 2 of 4) for flash flooding this afternoon into this
evening. Outside of the flash flooding threat, gusty winds up to
30-40 mph as well as frequent lightning will also be threats as
CAPE values are forecast to reach 1500-2000 J/kg this afternoon
coupled with low level lapse rates around 7.5-8.0 C/km. Lightning
damage has already been observed this morning in portions of
northern Alabama as frequent lightning has been observed with
storms. Remember- if thunder roars, go indoors! The ongoing storms
should mitigate heat concerns, with high temperatures rising into
the upper 80s under dense cloud cover. However, heat indices are
still forecast to reach the upper 90s to 100 degrees in some
areas.
Storms should be scattered in coverage throughout the day, but
continue through the evening before gradually clearing from west
to east. In their wake, lingering cloud cover should prevent
widespread fog formation. However, if clearing occurs, there is a
low chance of patchy fog overnight. Any fog that does form should
dissipate shortly after sunrise. Low temperatures are forecast to
drop into the low to mid 70s.

.SHORT TERM...
(Sunday through Tuesday)
Issued at 1101 AM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025
As sfc high pressure continues to remain in place along the Gulf,
southeastern flow continues to dominate the Tennessee Valley. This
will allow elevated PWATs (2-2.25") to continue to influence the
area through the early part of the week- increasing rainfall
potential of any thunderstorms that form throughout the area. The
Weather Prediction Center continues to outline portions of
northeastern AL and southern middle Tennessee in a Marginal risk
(level 1 of 4) for flash flooding both Sunday and Monday before
spreading the risk over the entire area on Tuesday. Saturated
soils will allow trees to fall over more easily with a lower gust
threshold during afternoon thunderstorms as well. Therefore,
downed trees may be observed despite no severe storms forming. In
addition to the flooding threat with daily thunderstorm chances,
gusty winds up to 50 mph and frequent lightning will be a threat.
On Monday, there will be a low risk for severe storms as the upper
level ridge strengthens and a potential MCS develops. If this
occurs, the primary threat will be damaging winds up to 60 mph.
Heat will also become a larger threat in the short term as the
aforementioned ridge amplifies over the South. For now, we are
holding off on a Heat Advisory for tomorrow as cloud cover is
forecast to be present over the western portions of the area,
which should keep heat indices just below 105 degrees. However,
heat products will be considered in future updates for the rest of
the week as highs are forecast to reach the 90s with heat indices
up to 105-109 degrees. We continue to urge everyone to stay
hydrated and use sun protection!
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday night through Saturday)
Issued at 743 PM CDT Fri Jul 18 2025
Mid and upper level heights will increase with the 5h anticyclone
building over the mid South Wednesday into Friday. This will
stunt thunderstorm activity further mainly to our south along the
Gulf Coast associated with another westward moving wave. However,
ridge rider MCSs/MCVs are indicated in the models that may rotate
southwest through the Piedmont and lower Appalachians which could
enter eastern AL at times next week. Thus, low chances will exist
each day, mainly in our eastern forecast area. Typical summertime
heat is expected as well which will become persistent with time.
High temperatures will consistently reach the lower to middle 90s,
with lows in the lower 70s east to middle 70s west. Heat index
values will likely reach or possibly exceed 105F in our central
and western counties, and in the upper 90s to lower 100s in our
eastern counties. Heat Risk levels of 2-3 are indicated all week
as well.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 540 AM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025
Scattered thunderstorms with MVFR ceilings are currently moving
through HSV. Low ceiling and VCTS are expected to remain through
midday, at which point ceilings look to improve to VFR yet
coverage of showers and storms will likely increase. Any storm
that moves directly over the terminals will be capable of briefly
lowering both ceilings and visibilities. Storms will wane after
sunset with VFR conditions prevailing for the remainder of the TAF
period.
&&
.CLIMATE...
Issued at 1101 AM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025
Moderate Risk for Much Above Normal Temperatures:
The Climate Prediction Center has included all of north Alabama and
southern middle Tennessee in a Moderate Risk for Much Above Normal
Temperatures for July 26th through August 1st. Temperatures reaching
or exceeding the mid to upper 90s with heat indices between 100-105
degrees F are possible during this period.
